Originally hailing from Queens, New York, the Down Beats regularly played at a venue called The Sideshow on Francis Lewis Blvd. In Whitestone, in the northernmost part of the borough from the mid to late 1950s. The main members of the group were Phil Novak (vocals), John Signorelli (guitar), and Neil Boss (piano). Featured here is their rare classic single, "Intermission Riff " b/w "Jelly Bean," originally released on the Safari label in 1958. The A side is a pleasant, upbeat instrumental with a vocal chorus and wailing saxophone. The B side contains some funny lyrics about a "Teenage Queen named Jelly Bean," and features some excellent guitar work from John Signorelli. This single is one of the only known recordings from this excellent group.
